by photochick~ We're trying a few new baby items the second time around and so far they have turned out to be great. I thought I'd share for those of you who are still in the baby making business. . .
Co-sleeper
We used a basinett for the first few weeks of babyness with Punkin, but after seeing a co-sleeper at a kids consignment sale a couple of years ago, I was sold on giving it a try. It basically looks like a pack and play, but one side lets down and it attaches with wide bands to our adult bed. This ensures that there is no gap between the co-sleeper and our bed for the baby to fall into. It is basically an extension of our bed, but a safe place for baby.
I purchased ours used from a co-worker and it looks like brand new. So far it is a total winner! The baby doesn't know he's "almost" in the bed with mom and dad, but I have the convenience of simply reaching out my arm and feeling him breathe in the middle of the night, or pat him on the back when he starts to wake up, or any one of the million other things you do with baby in the middle of the night. I'm not one to nurse laying down, but if you are, this is the PERFECT solution. You can just pull the baby to you to nurse, then move him back over to the co-sleeper when finished without ever getting out of bed. It can also be converted froma free standing basinett, to a co-sleeper and to a play yard.
I'm sure there are many options out there, but we have the Arms Reach co-sleeper basinett. In addition to how functional it is, I was also impressed that it's not ugly. We have the long liner, which means the entire exterior of the co-sleeper is covered in a pretty white waffle textured fabric so it's not an eye sore.
I used a bassinet for my little one and now at 1 month he stretches so much that he hits the sides and tends to wake up more often. My Mom has this quilt that zips up and you can place the baby in it. It is really soft- pretty much like a comforter. He loves it. The negative is finding a place for it- the past 2 nights it has been in the bed with me... but I think I am going to try to manuever it in my bassinet so that he will sleep longer than 20 minutes in it and not get used to sleeping in Mom's bed.
