by photochick~ I was reading my daily dose of the blogosphere today during my break (ya' know, since i don't smoke or work with the first person i could chat with), and as par for the course was looking at some photography blogs.
This particular blog featured photos from a recent wedding she had shot and at the end had a photo of the book "The Velveteen Rabbit." Understandably confused and thinking, "I know I'm slow, but what the heck does that have to do with anything?" I finally resort to actually reading the words, as if that should be a requirement. Do they think I'm literate or something?
So anyway, the story goes like this: the couple had the bride's sister read a passage from "The Velveteen Rabbit" during the ceremony. I was skeptical, but read on. Holy crapsters, it was amazing. Thinking of it in relationship to a wedding, and a new love and all. And then to my now growing old love. How very true it is. You've gotta read (and grab a tissue if you've been a little worn along the way):
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real." "Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit. "Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt." "Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?" "It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

This is one of my favorite books from when I was a kid. I have not read it in years and I love this passage. Thanks for such a great post!
